THE JACK BROOKS AWARD

The Jack Brooks Award was created to honor those who demonstrate leadership in preserving the ideals of America’s representative democracy. For the 2022 Jack Brooks Award, we sought to recognize elected officials or organization leaders who crafted legislation and went beyond partisan politics to make it easier for Americans to participate in The Voting Process.

According to the Pew Research Center, the United States saw record-breaking numbers with nearly 158.4 million ballots cast in the 2020 presidential election. While we saw increases across all 50 states and the highest turnout in more than a century, approximately one third of eligible U.S. voters still did not cast a ballot in 2020.

As we reflect upon the 2020 election and look to the 2022 midterms, voting and civic engagement continue to remain at the forefront of the American consciousness. With several election reforms and voting rights laws pending at the local, state, and federal levels, the importance of education and equal access to The Voting Process is crucial now more than ever.

No matter the outlet, a clear understanding of active civic participation and the role every American citizen plays in that process is of the utmost importance. The Jack Brooks Award will continue to celebrate the leaders who encourage and inspire the American electorate to fully engage in our nation’s representative democracy.

 The 2022 Jack Brooks Award

Left to Right: Senator Jennifer McClellan (VA),
Delegate Marcia Price (VA), Governor Phil Scott (VT)

“Delegate Price and I are different generations, but we definitely stand on the shoulders of those who came before us to fight for voting rights and civil rights and I’m just incredibly proud that Virginia is leading the way in the south on voting rights.”

- Senator Jennifer McClellan,
Virginia State Senator, 9th District

“The crossroads that we are in in Virginia and nationally, what will our democracy be for the next generation if it even will be here?

- Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price,
Virginia House of Delegates, 95th District

“I’m signing this bill because I believe making sure voting is easy and accessible, and increasing voter participation, is important. Having said that, we should not limit this expansion of access to general elections alone, which already have the highest turnout.”

- Vermont Governor Phil Scott
